Small and Medium Sized Enterprises Statistics

In industry and service sectors 2 millions 677 thousands enterprises were active Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) constituted 99.8% of total number of enterprises, 73.5% of employment, 54.1% of wages and salaries, 62% of turnover, 53.5% of value added at factor cost and 55% of gross investment in tangible goods in 2014. The vast majority of SMEs were active in trade sector At Statistical Classification of Economic Activities (NACE Rev. 2) section level, 39.2% of SMEs were active in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, 15.4% were active in transportation and storage; 12.4% were active in manufacturing industry in 2014. With regards to size class, 60.4% of SMEs with 1-19 persons employed worked with low technology, 31.1% of SMEs worked with medium-low technology and 8.3% of SMEs worked with medium-high technology. While in SMEs with 20-49 persons employed the shares in same technology levels were respectively 53%, 28.4% and 17.6% in SMEs with 50-249 persons employed the shares were 49.7%, 31.4% and 17.4%. The proportion of the SMEs was 55.1% in exports The proportion of the Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) which have 1-249 persons employed was 55.1% for exports and 37.7% for imports in 2015. In 2015, the rate of micro enterprises (1-9 persons employed) was 17.7%, small enterprises (10-49 persons employed) was 20.3%, medium-sized enterprises (50-249 persons employed) was 17.1% and large enterprises (250+) was 44.8% in exports. SMEs which took place in industry sector, performed 36% of exports and SMEs whose main activity was trade, performed 59.3% of exports. The proportion of the SMEs was 37.7% in imports The rate of micro enterprises (1-9 persons employed) was 6.3%, small enterprises (10-49 persons employed) was 13.1%, medium-sized enterprises (50-249 persons employed) was 18.2% and large enterprises (250+) was 62.3% in imports in 2015. Exports of SMEs to the Europe were 49%

According to foreign trade by country groups, the proportion of exports to European Countries and Asian countries made by the SMEs was 49% and 34.5% for 2015. The rate of European Countries was 50.4% and Asian Countries was 39.5% in imports in 2015. 92.3% of SMEs exports were manufactured products. The proportion of wearing apparel was 16% textiles was 10.1% and basic metals was 9.2%, for exports. SMEs imported chemicals and chemical products as a rate of 16.5%, machinery and equipment not elsewhere classified was 13.1% and basic metals was 10.5% in 2015. 17.7% of R&D expenditure was performed by SMEs Gross Domestic Expenditure on R&D in Turkey was 20 billion 615 million TL in 2015. 17.7% of R&D expenditure was performed by SMEs. Total number of Full Time Equivalent (FTE) R&D personnel was 122 288 in 2015. Regarding FTE R&D personnel distribution, 27.5% was employed in SMEs. 93.5% of SMEs used the Internet According to the survey results (1) on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Usage in Enterprises in 2016, 93.7% of enterprises with ten or more employees used the Internet. This ratio was 93.5% of SMEs. In 2016, 95.9% of enterprises used computer and 66% of enterprises has their own website. At the same period, these ratios were 95.8% and 65.2% in SMEs respectively. 85.9% of SMEs used the internet for interaction with public authorities Proportion of enterprises that used the Internet for interaction with public authorities was 86.2% in 2015. This ratio was 85.9% in SMEs. In 2015, 11.9% of enterprises received orders for products or services via web pages or Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). This percentage was 11.6 in SMEs.
